Anchor Award 2020
The Anchor Awards were announced on 19th September 2020. Among the nominees were two gigmit acts: the Dresden electropop duo ÄTNA and Tuvaband from Norway. The Anchor Award has been honouring up-and-coming international musicians since 2016. It is awarded every year at the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg. For the winners, it is a springboard for an international career. ÄTNA wins the Anchor Award 2020.
Congratulations On the Anchor Award, ÄTNA!
“ÄTNA turns the floor into lava”, says the six-member jury of experts, which included Melanie C. and Markus Kavka. Inéz Schaefer and Demian Kappenstein had finally convinced with their “bombastic sounds“. Congratulations!
At first sight, the wheelhouses of Inéz Schaefer and Demian Kappenstein hardly seem to match: He immerses himself in crafting organic beats, recorded on drums and enhanced with delicate effects. She is an utterly unique kind of singer, channelling vocals and piano into surreal elegies that sound as though refracted through a prism. But when you listen closely, the songs they produce together as Ätna are imbued with incomprehensible magic that defies all conventions, singular in style and execution. Songs such as “Ruining my Brain” and “Come to Me” seamlessly blend art-pop, futuristic indietronica, lush rhythms, and glorious vocals, evoking a longing that speaks of wanderlust – and cause goosebumps without fail. There is no doubt about it: Their debut Made By Desire marks a new chapter in German pop history.
